The Beginning of Unreal Journey

The class was tasked with creating a “world” using the Unreal engine for the assignment. The goal was to get comfortable with the software and think about ways to build a world conceptually. The approach I took was to rebuild a world that mimicked real-world qualities and bridge science fiction elements into this world. I started from a storytelling perspective that could help influence the world. The world I wanted to achieve was cold, rigid, and desolate.

Quick backstory:
It’s the year 3050, and Earth is no longer exists due to nuclear warfare. A few humans were able to escape. They’re on a quest to find a new home. Our explorers discovered the planet Strarth Y9 known for its extreme mountain ranges, cold weather, and limited amounts of greenery.

Elinor Fuchs discusses the importance of understanding the world we are trying to create but also understanding the balance of how the world might change over a period of time. I think that is important to think about. As designers, nothing is ever finished but we should continue to think about how elements can change over time whether through interactions or real-world experiences.
